How to Record a Demo Video That Actually Keeps People Watching

1. Script the moments, not the whole video

You do not need a word-for-word script. Write down the 3-5 actions you want to show (e.g. "click new project," "drag the file in," "hit export") and record around those beats. Trying to narrate everything live usually produces a slower, less confident recording.

2. Record at full resolution, decide on crop later

Capture your full screen or window at your monitor's native resolution. Cropping and reframing later — especially with auto-zoom — gives you more room to highlight the right area without recording twice.

3. Let auto-zoom follow your cursor instead of manually keyframing

Manually adding zoom keyframes in a traditional video editor can take longer than the recording itself. A recorder with automatic cursor-tracking zoom (like Lumiko) analyzes your clicks and movement and applies smooth pans automatically, so the viewer's eye is guided to whatever you clicked without you scrubbing a timeline.

4. Blur anything sensitive before you forget

API keys, customer data, email addresses, and account balances end up on screen more often than people expect during a demo. Do a pass with a blur tool immediately after recording, while you still remember exactly where the sensitive info appeared.

5. Trim dead space at the start and end

The first and last few seconds of most recordings are just you clicking "record" and finding the stop button. A basic trim pass on the timeline removes this without needing a full editing suite.

6. Export at the resolution your audience will actually watch

If the video is going into a help doc or embedded on a page, 1080p is usually enough. Save 4K exports for cases where viewers might zoom in themselves, like detailed UI walkthroughs.

Tools like Lumiko handle steps 3 through 6 inside the browser, with no upload step and no rendering queue.
